Short History
In 1985 PTI T.M.Theiventhiran prepared a court in V/Vavuniya Tamil Madya M. V grass ground near the science lab, T.Amalan, Rajmohan, S.Sureshkumar , S.Jeyanthan, Santhiran, S.Aravinthan, N.P Suntherangan , Ketheswaran and Sivakumar played their practice matches in that badminton court, At the same time there was 2 another badminton courts were prepared behind the BOC and Kudiyiruppu YMCA which belongs to BOC workers and government staffs
For the first time in 1987 V/V.T.M.M. V conducted Interhouse sports meet among the other schools in Vavuniya. Between 1987-1990 they made an indoor court in Ayathurai hall and do practices and they have conducted their inter-house sports meet in that venue.
In 1993 Vavuniya National College of Education built an indoor badminton court and started practices for the students who were studying there.
1995-1997 Vimala Chandran, Seelan, Premkumar, Rajkumar, Kamalan, Nimalan, Gnana Kumar, Gnanasooriyan, Amalan, Sivananthan, Thuvaragan, Rajith prepared a few more courts in BOC residents and Government residents played their practice matches in that venue.
1998.07.11, There was a conference help between the clubs in government agent conference hall, as the e outcome under the supervision of government agent Kanesh started an association for indoor sports S. Alga Rathnam (president VNCOE) appointed as the president of the association T. M. Theivanthiran (PII) as secretary and N.P Sutherangan appointed as treasurer of the association. Provincial level badminton competition happened between 1995-1997 T.Amalan, S.Aravinthan, Sivananthan, N.P.Suntherangan Premkumar and Rajkumar represented our district.
In this time BOC, government resident kachcheri got outdoor court and only in VNCOE was there an only indoor court
Then between 2008 – 2010-time Nothern province sports department build an indoor badminton court in Vavuniya Urban Council (UC) after that 2011, 2012, and 2014 Vavuniya district team were champion in Nothern Provincial Level Time 2012 – 2017 V/V.T.M. V school u15, un19 were Nothern Provincial Champions for those 6 years then in 2018, 2019, un-17, un 20 were runners up.
In 2021 for the first time in Sri Lanka Air badminton was started in Vavuniya and this event was started by SLBA president Rohan De Silva in 17.03.2021 Un 16, Un 14 school level development plans and National Workplan and under 17 development plans are conducted.
For every badminton player, the court is more than just a battleground
it is a canvas where memories are etched in swift movements and skillful strokes.
